Demystifying Sacroneuromodulation Lead Removal

Objectives: The purpose of this video abstract is to present a comprehensive guide with surgical tips to assist providers with the removal of sacrneuromodulation leads and generators while minimizing intraoperative complications.

Methods: Prior to recording the procedure, informed consent was obtained from the patient to capture images and videos of the procedure. The video clips were selected and edited to create a cohesive and informative educational video, including English narration. Measures were taken to protect the patient's privacy and confidentiality throughout the video creation process.

Clinical Relevance: Sacral neuromodulation is an FDA-approved treatment for conditions like overactive bladder, urinary retention, and fecal incontinence. It works by stimulating the S3 nerve root to alter spinal reflexes related to urination and defecation. After a trial period using an external battery with temporary or permanent leads, about 80% of patients proceed with permanent implantation. While successful in most cases, up to 12% of patients may need device removal due to issues like infection, pain, ineffective leads, or conversion to MRI-compatible devices.

To our knowledge, there is limited research on proper technique for removing the tined lead. This guide aims to assist providers with lead removal and reduce intraoperative complications.
