RT04: Incorporating Surgical Coaching and Mentoring into Resident & Fellow Curriculum
Wednesday, October 23, 2024
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EDT
Location: Chinatown (Meeting Level 3)
This roundtable focuses on how to incorporate surgical coaching to enhance the surgical skills of trainees while fostering professional development. This process creates a safe environment to facilitate the best surgical acumen in each trainee. Incorporating, new approaches in surgical training allows to help with decreasing physician burnout with identifying areas of the trainee needs, and more closely integrated peer and mentor support. This combination of nurturing and support, through surgical coaching, results in better quality professional leadership for the trainee surgeon and improved surgical outcomes and quality matrix. Presenting this in a roundtable format will be optimal to create more interest, discussion, and engagement around ways to improve our training for the surgeons in our field. This roundtable is intended for any surgeon who works with trainees at all levels. Education has always been a passion and throughout my career I have been involved in various areas, including patient, community outreach and engagement, clinical education, & surgical training. I am a certified Surgical Coach through the Academy of Surgical Coaching and Associate Fellowship Director of our URPS fellowship. I have developed and piloted a surgical coaching training program at my institution for our resident and fellow trainees.
