RT01: Advancing Ethics and Sustainability in Urogynecologic Global Health Initiatives

Description/Outline: Participation in global health (GH) activities has grown exponentially in the last decades among health-care professionals and trainees. With the rapid growth of diverse GH experiences, ethical challenges arise relating to lack of sustainability, limited impact and paucity of supervision and follow-up. 

We will begin the activity by discussing these challenges and proposed solutions by experts in the field, such as the Working Group on Ethics Guidelines for Global Health Training (WEIGHT). We will describe Urogynecology-specific GH initiatives, their successes and challenges, including Urogynecologic education/ training programs in low-resource settings, research capacity building, and long-term fistula focused service partnerships.  We will facilitate open discussion among other experts in the field, GH activity participants, and colleagues with GH interest to critically examine the current Urogynecologic GH landscape. Collaboratively, we will propose ideas for alignment with GH ethical principles to re-focus on health equity and justice.

The facilitators have extensive GH leadership experience: Dr. Pancheshnikov is the founder/lead of a collaborative longitudinal Urogynecology course in the Caribbean and the director of her institution’s GH center; Dr. Ringel is the founder/lead of a Global Women's Health Faculty Network in her institution, focusing on research, education, and programmatic strategies to address women's GH inequities.
