Dr. James (Jim) Hokanson, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering between the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University. Dr. Hokanson’s postdoctoral training was under the mentorship of Dr. Warren Grill at Duke University, studying electrical stimulation therapies to treat bladder dysfunction. At Duke Dr. Hokanson was a KURe K12 scholar, mentored by Dr. Cindy Amundsen, and received a AUA research scholar award to study electrical stimulation of the urethra. Dr. Hokanson was also awarded a K01 to develop prediction models for 3rd line urgency incontinence therapies
Dr. Hokanson is an investigator for NIDDK’s Symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network (LURN). As part of this network Dr. Hokanson has led data analysis efforts related to lower urinary tract physiological testing (LURN-Organ subproject).
Dr. Hokanson is interested in developing novel therapies to treat pelvic dysfunction, focusing primarily on electrical stimulation to treat urgency incontinence. He is also interested in better understanding why people respond to therapies by using improved diagnostics and statistical modeling, an approach he feels will facilitate the development of novel therapeutics that target populations that are non-responsive to current therapies.
