Dr. S. Abbas Shobeiri (Iranian-American, b. 1964) is an international authority, researcher, and surgeon in the field of pelvic floor ultrasound and urogynecology. Dr. Shobeiri is also a professional painter (www.ShobeiriArt.com) whose painting series, “Do You See Me? Paintings of Postpartum Trauma and Healing,” received great reviews from the Washington Post and ABC News, amongst many. He concentrates on stories and general motifs of post-traumatic stress disorder postpartum patients convey. He is especially passionate about advocating for this very vulnerable population.
His paintings promote emotional literacy and break social taboos surrounding childbirth and mental health. Harnessing his first-hand experience as a doctor working with mothers for the past 30 years, he brings an empathetic lens into the complex experience of being a mother. Dr. Shobeiri leverages his knowledge of anatomy, ultrasound, maternal mental health, and post-traumatic stress disorder to bring to you diverse voices from different ages, cultures, gender identities, and abilities. Pelvic Floor Ultrasound is central to Abbas Shobeiri’s medical and artistic practice of diagnosing and healing physical and psychological aspects of pelvic floor trauma. His practice pivots between a clinic consulting room, the operating rooms, and the easel engaging in vulnerable dialogues with the new mothers initially, then sharing their stories visually while poignantly addressing broader mental health issues. Always keeping his participants engaged, the goal is to start the piece with a conversation and end the piece by sparking new conversations. This is done with the hope that people can access solidarity with others who relate to the depicted emotional states, encouraging more transparency, dialogue, and support in our communities.
