Steven D. Abramowitch, Ph.D., is the William Kepler Whiteford Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering. Nationally and internationally recognized for his work in biomechanics related to female pelvic health, he has secured over $12M in research funding and published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles. These have been collectively cited over 5,900 times.
Dr. Abramowitch has also received numerous accolades for his contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). He is the co-Principal Investigator of two significant NSF grants aimed at creating opportunities and fostering inclusive environments for underrepresented and underserved students in Engineering, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His STRIVE program has garnered the highest award at the University of Pittsburgh for work in DEI. In addition, Dr. Abramowitch received the Biomedical Engineering Society's highest award for DEI in 2019.
Dr. Abramowitch earned his BS in Applied Mathematics in 1998 and his Ph.D. in Bioengineering in 2004, both from the University of Pittsburgh. He joined the university's Department of Bioengineering as a Research Assistant Professor in 2004. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2007 and to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2015. In 2016, he was named a William Kepler Whiteford Faculty Fellow, and he attained the rank of Full Professor in 2021.
