Dr. Elisa Trowbridge is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Division Director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Virginia. Dr. Trowbridge received her medical degree at the University of Maryland and OB/GYN residency training at Emory University. She completed her fellowship training in Urogynecology at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and was recruited to the University of Virginia as an Assistant Professor in 2007.
Dr. Trowbridge is nationally recognized clinician. She has developed innovative programs such as sacral neuromodulation for bladder and bowel incontinence, and improved patient care through clinical research in areas of surgical outcomes. Specifically, she is an expert in implementation of Enhanced Recovery Programs for perioperative. She has pioneered educational programs teaching anatomy and "hands on" training of surgical techniques for students, residents and practicing physicians. She has been recognized nationally with her clinical excellence, teaching and leadership. She was awarded the Dean’s Award for Clinical Excellence in 2011 and was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Educators in 2013.
Dr. Trowbridge’s clinical areas of interest and research include enhanced recovery protocol in gynecologic surgery, surgical and treatment outcomes for pelvic floor disorders (PFD), medical education, patient education and satisfaction.
Dr. Trowbridge has served on the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) Board of Directors of AUGS. She is currently serving on the American College of OBGYN (ACOG) Board of Directors as well as the Editorial Board of the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive (FPMRS) journal. She is the Chair of the newly formed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion AUGS Committee. Dr. Trowbridge is active in the school of medicine and mentors undergraduate students, medical students, nurses and residents in training.
